Dear Friends and Clients,
On behalf of Jewels by Design and myself, I hope that most of you have weathered the disaster caused by the recent flooding. The devastation was truly horrible. I know the after-math and the clean-up will exact a great deal of time, energy and money plus of course, an immense emotional toll.
My shop was spared any flooding at all and for that I am eternally thankful.
If your jewellery did become immersed in potentially contaminated flood waters, I would like to make some suggestions regarding proper cleaning of the pieces.
If the jewellery is made of gold, silver or platinum and set with durable gemstones such as diamonds, ruby, sapphire, garnet or tourmaline simply give it a good soaking in hot water with liquid dish detergent and then a brisk scrub with an old toothbrush and rinse well with plain water.
You could follow this soap and water scrub with a dip in rubbing alcohol, blotted with a towel and then air dried followed by a buff with a soft cloth.
IF, HOWEVER, your jewellery is set with ammolite, pearls, turquoise, opal, coral or other soft or porous gemstones these pieces should be cleaned much more carefully. You can still give them a gentle scrub with water and liquid dish soap but avoid rapid temperature changes which can cause thermal shock and do not use the alcohol bath.
If you have a strand of pearls, they should probably be re-strung since the cord which they are strung on will retain moisture and potentially pathogens.
As a service to our clients, please bring your jewellery to Jewels by Design and we will check and clean the pieces for you at no charge.
